On the morning of Saturday 16 May 1724 the tower of St Nicholas' church came down when the entire south-west corner, the part containing the stairwell, failed. The church's 500-year-old medieval roof was replaced between 1875 and 1881. The Market Cross of the very early 17th century is timber-framed, refurbished in 1897, with lead roofs and a brick plinth. 4 Market Place dates to the early 1600s, a stucco rendered front range with a flint wall to the east under a steep, machine tiled roof with a central cluster of four octagonal chimney shafts. The town is on the North Walsham and Dilham Canal.
