The 1887 station was built for the Eastern and Midlands Railway, probably to a design by the company engineer William Marriott, and it was roofed in Welsh slate. Most of what we are called to in Sheringham is plainer than that: slipped slates after a gale, a chimney letting water past the flashing, a flat roof over a back extension, a valley patched once too often, gutters dropped at the joint. That station has stood since 1887, longer than any roof we are asked to look at in the town, and it frames the question we put on an ordinary Sheringham roof: has the slate itself gone, or have the fixings, the flashings and the gutters around it?
Sheringham sits on the Norfolk coast, about 5 miles (8 km) west of Cromer and about 26 miles (42 km) north of Norwich. The town's current railway station was opened by British Rail on 2 January 1967. Sheringham railway station is the northern terminus of the Bittern Line, the National Rail route.
