St Mary's church at Wroxham carries three different roof coverings on one building. The church roofs are lead. The south aisle was rebuilt in the 19th century and carries a slate roof. The north aisle roof has a 20th century felt covering. The walls are flint with limestone dressings, and the fabric is mainly 15th century, with 12th century remains in the nave. In the nave, octagonal piers, without capitals, support four-centred arches with double hollow chamfers. The very fine Norman south doorway has three orders of engaged shafts with decorated bands, capitals and abaci, and these support an arch of seven orders, each order having a separate carved motif. Between the 12th century doorway, the 15th century fabric and the 19th century south aisle rebuild, three periods of work stand side by side.
Wroxham is some eight miles north-east of Norwich, linked to it by the A1151 road. The station now called Hoveton & Wroxham opened as Wroxham on 20 October 1874 and is on the Bittern Line, 8 miles 61 chains down the line from Norwich. A nearby station named Wroxham is the southern terminus of the 15 inch gauge Bure Valley Railway, which runs the 9 miles to Aylsham. The Bure Valley Railway opened on 10 July 1990. The line through Aylsham formally closed on 6 January 1982.
