Roofing in Aylsham

The Old Hall, on Blickling Road in Aylsham, carries the date 1686 on the east face of its central chimney stack. It is red brick, with hipped pantile roofs, two storeys, an attic and a basement. There are three chimney stacks in all, and three dormers, each with a segmental head. The parish church of St Michael is built of flint, sometimes knapped, with rubble infilling. Its tower is of the 14th century, a rare example of its type surviving from the Middle Ages, and its two-storeyed porch dates from 1488. We relay pantiles by hand, sort out flashings, and say plainly what a roof actually needs and what it does not.
